Be Prepared: Protect Your Business and Team Ahead of the CMA Regulations

Whether we like it or not, CMA regulations are coming (more info here), and they will have significant impact on the viability of clinics and how veterinary teams operate day to day. These changes aim to improve transparency for clients, but as they stand, will add significant administrative strain on clinics and individual team members that are already stretched.

What This Could Look Like in Practice

Each vet and nurse could soon be required to:

  • Provide live price lists for select services.
  • Issue multiple written prescriptions at the time of consult, or by end of day for digital written prescriptions.
  • Discuss cheapest alternative sourcing options with every client.

These are just a small proportion of the 21 requirements being considered at the moment. The real risks are that - consultations will overrun, vets will rush, thoroughness may suffer, and the personal connection with clients and pets will be harder to maintain. History writing will likely be completed at the end of the day, emergencies will be harder to fit in, and add-on services (blood tests, cytology, nail clips etc) may need to be rescheduled.

The Impact on Clinic Operations

The reality is, most practices don’t have the time, means, or staffing to absorb this level of extra admin.

Without proper support, digital systems or frameworks, the consequences may be:

  • Fewer consults available for pet owners and fewer patients seen per day.
  • Increased consultation and service fees to offset lost time and revenue.
  • Burnout across teams having to take on more responsibilities to stay compliant.

The Effect on Client and Patient Care

These changes will not only affect the veterinary and management teams - the knock on effects will certainly affect pet owners. Longer wait times, reduced appointment availability and rising prices - all of which make it harder for clients to access care when they need it most.

If This Came Into Play Tomorrow…

Put simply, most businesses wouldn’t cope. Where do you even start?

The systems in place today weren’t built to manage this kind of regulatory load. Unless practical tools and frameworks are introduced, clinics will be having to prioritise quality of care, revenue, or compliance.

What Clinics Can Do Now

We can’t stop these changes, but we can prepare ahead of time.

From now until Feb/March 2026 - teams need to keep up to date with, and understand the CMA’s proposals, predict how they will impact their team and their day to day, and plan how to adapt. Be proactive, plan ahead and share your thoughts:

  • Stay informed - follow updates from the CMA and RCVS as plans unfold.
  • Start discussions internally - talk openly with your team about what these changes might mean day to day.
  • Review your workflows - identify where your current systems or processes might struggle under extra admin load.
  • Share your voice - participate in webinars, forums, or surveys to ensure clinics in your position are represented in the conversation.

How How is Lupa Helping?

At Lupa, we recognise that the CMA’s proposed regulations will place added administrative pressure on clinic teams. We’ve already developed compliant tools that reduce this workload by up to 80%, focusing on practical, time-saving solutions - from clearer price visibility and easier client communication to tools that keep consults running on time. To minimise disruption and ensure we build technology that’s genuinely useful to clinics, we’re doubling down on our investment and working closely with both the CMA and our clinics using Lupa. Our approach combines the following:

  • Veterinary expertise - led by Dr. Nick Lloyd, practising vet, former practice owner and SPVS President.
  • Powerful engineering expertise and capacity - backed by £19M in investment, we build  tools designed for vets and the specific challenges these new regulations will bring.
  • Direct insight from clinics - we listen and work closely with our clinics already using Lupa, gathering their feedback on how we can best support them through the upcoming changes.
